Choral Conducting Gallery

Being a lifelong choral singer has given me a unique perspective on choirs and the needs of singers in the ensemble setting. I use my experience as a chorister and expertise as a voice teacher to inform and enhance my directing and choir training. I encourage singers to approach music with healthy singing habits. I also help them understand their own instrument.

Hailed as “a soprano of grace and elegance” by the Washington Post, Rebecca Kellerman is a New York City soprano and choral specialist with 30+ years of experience singing, teaching, and working with chorister programs as singer, director, and vocal coach. Rebecca serves as Music Associate for Children and Youth at Saint Thomas Church in New York City where she founded their children’s choir, The Noble Singers, now in its fourth year. She also teaches the probationer choristers of the Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys and has served as Co-Director of the Saint Thomas Girl Chorister Course where she introduced the new Choral and Organ Scholar program, developed to encourage young women in the field of music to consider careers in church music.

As a soloist and professional chorister, Rebecca has made frequent appearances with groups such as The Washington Bach Consort, Bach Collegium San Diego, Opera Lafayette, Three Notch’d Road, Cathedra, Chantry, Chatham Baroque, The National Gallery of Art Vocal Ensemble, The Bach Sinfonia, The Washington Chorus and Cathedral Voices of The Washington National Cathedral. She has worked with conductors such as Robert Shafer, Julian Wachner, Ruben Valenzuela, Christoph Eschenbach, Robert King, Jane Glover and Leonard Slatkin. Rebecca holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in voice performance at Shenandoah University, and has pursued advanced studies in Music Education and Vocal Pedagogy and is currently working toward certification in the Kodaly Music Method. She enjoys leading workshops for choral singers of all ages and sharing her passion for choral singing with choirs and choristers around the country.  Rebecca’s new solo album “In Youth Is Pleasure: Art Songs & Mélodies of England and France” is now available on Raven Records and streaming platforms.

TESTIMONIALS

Mrs. Kellerman-Filsell led an outstanding vocal workshop for the St. Boniface Choir during our fall kick-off retreat. Her expertise as both a virtuosic soloist and an excellent choral singer allows her to bridge ideas between the two singing worlds, bringing in techniques from her solo work and helping both professional and amateur choristers alike learn how to improve their skills as choristers. Rebecca, having worked with a wide range of ages, also made the workshop accessible for our youngest and oldest singers by including activities and exercises that were thoroughly enjoyed by all ages. I couldn’t recommend a better vocal clinician for choirs, whatever the size or demographic.

Ms. Kellerman-Filsell has left an indelible mark on my child’s musical education!  Rebecca’s dedication to excellence, interminable patience, and enthusiastic love of music has shaped the Noble Singers into a vibrant group of young choristers. Our daughter has learned valuable vocal techniques that will benefit her for life. When it came time to prepare for an important off Broadway show audition, we knew exactly who to turn to — Rebecca’s private vocal coaching sessions gave my daughter an advantage that ultimately helped her book the role. Thank you for everything, Ms. K-F!

Mrs. K-F, as the children call her, is a gift and a treasure to any fortunate enough to have her choral leadership cross their path.   While her musical knowledge, experience, and leadership is exceptional, I will let others speak to this. I want to share, as a parent of two of her choristers, what makes her one of a kind. She teaches the choristers not by telling them, but by the sheer power of her own example, that the true calling of their music is not a performance to be applauded, but rather a gift to be given for the benefit of others.  Her humility and grace coupled with an unwavering confidence in those she leads, lets the music and the lessons shine through the hearts and voices of the choristers. She believes in the individual ability of each child and creates an environment where the confidence they feel from her, not only makes for majestic music, but allows them to push themselves to do things they never thought they could do.  Her genuine love of the music cannot help but become infectious to the choristers. As my son says, “Oh yes, Mom, she expects a lot from us, and we work hard!  I like that she treats us like grown-ups and not little kids, but  at the same time she makes it fun!”
